Kindness, peace, and a shared future.
Building a global network of Planetwalkers through environmental education, responsibility, peace, and cooperation.
We are part of the environment.
Founded in 1982 by John Francis and three friends, Planetwalk is a nonprofit educational organization. We connect a global community of Planetwalkers through walking, environmental education, and scientific inquiry, working toward peace and cooperation.
John’s pilgrimage reminds us that people are part of the environment. Care for our planet includes social justice, human rights, and how we treat ourselves and one another. We learn across cultures and communities to help create a sustainable future for all.
A history of learning across boundaries
- Environmental justice conversations with grassroots leaders, UNEP, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, including work aired at the 1992 Earth Summit.
- Appleseeds, a hands-on environmental program for students in the Caribbean.
- Planetwalk Cuba in 2003, bringing students, scientists, and environmental practitioners together on a 100-mile walk.
- Collaboration with GLOBE and the development vision for Planetlines.
- International walks, including Hangzhou, China, in 2014, and school-based activities in Asia.
- The Africa journey and the vision for a global network of Planetwalk Clubs.
These experiences continue to shape our work. We invite you to participate in the journey for a better world.
